Amazon announces name of Clarkson, Hammond and May’s new show

11th May 2016 by StreamedTV

clarkson_hammon_may_amazonAmazon’s new motoring show starring Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May will be called The Grand Tour.

The trio previously tried registering Gear Knobs as the new show’s name but Clarkson later confirmed BBC bosses had banned them from including the world ‘gear’ in its title.

Last month they published a spoof video showcasing their efforts to find a name for the series for which Amazon is reportedly paying £160m.

The 36-part series is being by production company W Chump & Sons which was set up by Clarkson, Hammond and May along with their former Top Gear producer Andy Wilman and will be available to anyone with an Amazon Prime subscription.

Unveiling the new name, Clarkson said: ‘We’ll be travelling the world hosting each episode in a different country, from a giant tent. It’s a sort of ‘grand tour’, if you like. So we’ve decided to call it “The Grand Tour”.

May quipped that he’d “wanted to call it ‘Nigel’, or ‘Roger’. We needed a name, and they’re names.”

Hammond said: “I already love camping, but this is something else. We are like our pioneering and prospecting forebears, sallying forth into a new frontier of broadcasting, and making our home where…”

On Twitter, Clarkson told his army of fans: “So, the Grand Tour (GT for short) will come from a tent, which we will put up in a different location every week. Your town?”

Amazon said: “Not only will the guys travel to different locations, but for the first time ever the studio audience recordings will travel every week, all housed within a giant tent.

“Amazon customers will have the chance to be in the audience when tickets are released through prize draws this summer.”
