BBC brings Connected Red Button to Samsung and Sony TVs

10th January 2014 - StreamedTV

The connected red button is now available on Sony Smart TVs.
The connected red button is now available on Sony Smart TVs.
The BBC has expended its broadband delivered ‘Connected Red Button’ service to selected internet-enabled Samsung and Sony TVs and promises to bring it to LG sets “in early 2014”.

The Connected Red Button offers a range of internet-delivered programming, news and sport content and is used by the corporation to boost coverage of live events such as Glastonbury, Wimbledon and Formula 1.

It also integrates access to the iPlayer, allowing viewers to catch up on missed shows on their TV rather than on a computer or tablet.

The service debuted on Virgin Media’s TiVo service in December 2012 and the corporation says it’ll be expanded to more devices and platforms in due course.

Roux Joubert, General Manager, Products & On Demand at the BBC, said: “Since the launch of Connected Red Button in 2012, the BBC has brought audiences more of the content they love on their TV – by simply pressing red.

“We’re thrilled to extend this to even more viewers – and look forward to adding more features and functionality in 2014 – which promises to be another an epic year of live events from the BBC.”

While the BBC hasn’t named which further platforms Connected Red Button will launch on, a YouView staff member last month claimed the service would be added to its platform in 2014 and that “more information will be made available regarding the service early next year.”
