Sky adds 34,000 new TV subscribers

26th July 2013 - Martin Hoscik

sky_logoSky added 34,000 new TV customers in the last quarter, taking its total TV customer base to 10.4m and cementing its position as the UK’s largest provider of pay-TV services.

The additions are revealed in the firm’s results for year to end of June which were published on Friday.

The TV gains cover both its traditional satellite business and NOW TV streaming service which offers no-contract access to Sky Movies and Sky Sports.

Figures show Sky has enjoyed significant growth in its non-broadcast products with a 19% increase in the number of Sky Go users, a fivefold increase in on-demand downloads and 200% growth in Sky Store rentals.

The company is supporting NOW TV with the launch of a new set top box retailing for just £9.99 including postage and packaging.

Jeremy Darroch, Chief Executive, commented: “We’ve seen an explosion in on-demand and mobile viewing as more people connect their Sky boxes to broadband and watch TV on laptops and mobile devices with Sky Go. Sky Go Extra, our new subscription service, has already attracted more than 150,000 customers in just five months.

“Customers tell us they get huge value from these services. The benefits to our business are equally strong through take-up of higher-tier packages, expanded revenue opportunities and improved customer satisfaction. We see an exciting opportunity for future growth in this area and we intend to increase investment over the next year to accelerate growth and returns from these new services.”

Other plans for the year ahead include increased spending on original British drama and further investment in customer service.

The company also added 117,000 new subscribers to its HD pack and 519,000 broadband subscribers, including 400,000 gained through its acquisition of O2’s home phone and broadband services.
